Building Blocks to Literacy
Research suggests that in order for a reader to move one reading level in a school year, they should read a MINIMUM of two hours per day. Here at school, we do our best to get that reading in! But even with our best efforts, we cannot block out two hours of reading time during the day. That's why it is IMPERATIVE that your child also read at home each day. Below is a list of sixth grade books that your child might find interesting. Help your student choose a text that is engaging, age and vocabulary appropriate. Most importantly encourage your child to establish the habit of reading EVERY day!
Upcoming Assignment and Project Due Dates
Reading Response Cumulative Project 1st Quarter Due: October 9, 2015
This year, in addition to the assigned reading that we will do together in class, you will be reading novels independently. The independent reading will be books YOU choose, because I want you to enjoy the reading. The reading can be from almost any genre that interests you, as long as it meets some basic requirements.
The requirements are:
-at least 150 pages in length
-diction (word choice or vocabulary) must be 6th grade level or higher
-content must be appropriate for class
-special requests for newspapers or magazines will be considered on an individual basis
How will Ms. Ari know whether or not I have done the reading? -- from your Daily Reading Response Entries. While you are reading, you will be jotting down your thoughts and reactions to the text and saving them in a section of your classroom binder. Attached you will find a list of Reader Response Prompts, which are basically the beginnings of sentences you can finish.
Once you have finished the book, you will have between 25 -100 entries completed. You will collect all of these entries together to form a packet, add a cover to your packet then, submit t he packet for a grade. These packets must be submitted at least 7 days before the end of the quarter to allow for grading time.
How many packets am I responsible for? Because you will be reading and responding to something almost every day, you should complete and submit at least one packet per quarter -- you may complete more to boost your grade, however each packet completed must meet the guidelines below.
How will the packets be graded? The following categories will be considered in the final grade for the Reading Response Packet:
· # of Reading Response Entries made (25 minimum – 115 maximum) 50pts
· Amount of info contained in each Entry 10pts
· Title on EVERY entry 10pts
· VARIETY of Reader Response prompts 10pts
· Overall neatness and appearance of the final packet 20pts
100 pts
Where will I find acceptable books to read? Our classroom library has a great selection of books, and our school librarian can provide you with an extensive list of books and you can bring a book to me for approval any time.
Happy Reading!!!
